The young girl from Usma village in Tarn Taran district who along with her father was mercilessly beaten up by Punjab Police personnel on March 4 appeared before National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Tribes vice-chairman Dr Raj Kumar Verka on Sunday and complained about her security apparatus.

She maintained that the Central Reserve Police Force men deputed for her security had restricted her and her family's movements to a large extend. The CRPF personnel question her as well as her family's movement and do not allow them to even meet their relatives, she told Dr Verka.

The 22-year-old victim also told the commission vice-chairman that while the Supreme Court had directed that two vehicles be deputed with the security detail, they have been given only one vehicle.

Following the meeting,  Dr Verka took up the matter with CRPF commandant in Amritsar and asked them to instruct their men to behave appropriately with the family. He also contacted the Tarn Taran deputy commissioner for providing the family one more vehicle and urged the department of social welfare to provide them financial help too.

Claiming the credit for the implementation of the SC/ST Sub-Plan, Union Minister of State for Tourism K. Chiranjeevi on Saturday said that the merger of his political outfit Praja Rajyam Party with the Congress had resulted in the implementation of the sub-plan.

"During the merger, I have asked the Congress high command to ensure social justice. This is my lone condition for the merger. The moment we merged into the Congress, the State government commenced implementing the SC/ST Sub-Plan," Mr. Chiranjeevi announced while addressing a public meeting organised at Uppada near here.

After laying the foundation stone for the construction of the State Hotel Management Institute to be built at a cost of Rs. 12 crore , he attended a public meeting along with a slew of Ministers from the State.

"There is no compromise on social justice, which is the slogan of the political party launched by me. I am happy with my present portfolio and loved to be the ambassador of Indian tourism," he said, adding that he had sanctioned funds to the tune of Rs.260 crore to the State for tourism development, in which Rs. 100 crore was for East Godavari district alone. "A tourism circuit has been developed between Konaseema-Papikondalu-Bhadrachalam and a world-class Home Science University will be set up in Tirupati soon," he said. Welcoming the verdict given by Karnataka voters in the recent elections to their State Assembly, Mr. Chiranjeevi said that people were not willing to encourage corruption. He said that the Congress was the only party that never spared corrupt leaders.

Stating that tourism was the largest employment generating sector in the world, Mr. Chiranjeevi said that employment on large scale would be provided to the educated youth from the rural pockets in the tourism sector. Tourism Minister Vatti Vasantha Kumar, Animal Husbandry Minister Pinipe Viswaroop, Stamps and Registrations Minister Tota Narasimham, Rajahmundry MP Undavilli Arun Kumar, MLAs and MLCs were present.

Later, Mr. Chiranjeevi laid foundation stone for the eco-tourism park that costs Rs. 5 crore, beach resorts and Shilparamam each at a budget of Rs. 7.5 crore at Vakalapudi. Notwithstanding the objections raised by the environmentalists, he laid foundation stone for the construction of tourist cottages near Coringa wildlife sanctuary.

Mysore: Amidst growing resentment over his selection as the new CM from the Dalit community, Chief Minister-designate Siddaramaiah on Sunday said he would do his best to take care of Dalit interests.  The Dalits have hit the streets to protest against Siddaramaiah being chosen over Union labour minister Mallikarjun Kharge—a Dalit— for the post.

In his first visit to his hometown Mysore after getting the coveted post, Siddaramaiah requested members of the Dalit community to maintain calm while sympathizing with Kharge. Asserting he also belongs to a backward class, the Kuruba leader said: "Yes, it's true that Kharge fully deserves to become CM. But the Congress high command has chosen me for the job. I am also a Dalit and want to assure the Dalit community that their interests and welfare will be taken care of." He  sought the support of Dalit leaders and promised to erase caste boundaries and deliver social justice.

Despite this assurance, activists of Dalit organizations continued their protests with a group ransacking the Congress office in Mysore and Nanjangud town. Sporadic incidents of stone-pelting on shops were reported from Nanjangud. The protests have become a major embarrassment as Varuna constituency represented by Siddaramaiah is part of Nanjangud taluk.

Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah offered special puja to Goddess Chamundeshwari at the historic Chamundi Hills on Sunday morning and prayed for the well-being of people of Karnataka.
"I sought divine blessings for good rains to help tide over the drought and maintain peace and communal harmony", he said adding his priority would be agricultural growth and addressing the drinking water crisis and power problem. "The State budget will be based on our poll manifesto", he announced.

Later, Siddaramaiah visited the residence of litterateur Devanur Mahadeva for an interaction before leaving for Bengaluru. He cancelled his visit to Suttur math as the pontiff was not available. He also did not visit his native Siddaramanahundi due to paucity of time. This has disappointment the villagers, who had made elaborate arrangements to welcome the son of the soil.
