By TCN News,

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday declared 'fake' as many as 16 out of the 19 police encounters that took place in Guntur and Kurnool districts between 2000 and 2002 when senior IPS officer P.S.R. Anjaneyulu was superintendent of police, were fake. NHRC has ordered compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families who lost their kin in these encounters. A total of 19 people were killed in the 16 encounters.

The Human Rights Forum of Guntur district had filed a case against IPS officer Anjaneyulu with the NHRC in July 2002. After 10 years of probe into these encounters, the NHRC on 13th July declared that 16 out of 19 encounters were fake.

IPS officer Anjaneyulu is currently inspector-general of Greyhounds – the anti-Naxal combat force.

While awarding compensation to the victims, the commission has gone silent about the police officer and his team who were involved in those encounters.

Advocate B. Chandrasekhar who fought the case on behalf of the Human Rights Forum of Guntur district has demanded action against the guilty policemen and compensation to the victims from their salaries.
