SKY IS THE LIMIT FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY: FAROOQ ABDULLAH

Kolkata, August 30, 2010

 

The Minister for New and Renewable Energy Shri Farooq Abdullah has said that sky is the limit for renewable energy. He said that India has a potential of 87000 mw of renewable energy of which wind energy is the chief contributor with 12000 mw. West Bengal has an edge over many other states in wind energy sector, Shri Abdullah pointed out. He was addressing at a meeting on 'Opportunities and Scope of Renewable Energy in West Bengal' organized by Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Kolkata today.

 

Shri Abdullah said that as cost of fossil fuel is rising and a lot of dollar money has to be spent for that, hence, renewable energy like solar power, wind energy, hydro power, bio-fuels etc. come in. He admitted the fact that at the beginning renewable energy is costly, but, "with more and more users, the cost will come down", he stressed. Dwelling on the hydro power, Shri Abdullah iterated upon the necessity of establishing small hydro power projects producing as low as 25mw of power 'which is enough to light up a small village'. He rued the fact that last year Rs. 6500 crore were given as power subsidy to farmers of Punjab and Haryana.

 

The Minister said that there are 8000 diesel run telecom towers in India. A programme with 100 telecom towers is going to be started soon on an experimental basis to run with renewable energy.
