Her Highness Princess Gabriele Inaara The Begum Aga Khan has graciously agreed to act as the Royal Patron to Children of Peace. Her Highness joins our other Patron – Madonna.

The Begum Aga Khan is passionate about protecting children and actively promotes understanding and tolerance amongst varied ethnic and religious communities. In March 2007, the Begum travelled to Palestine and Israel at the invitation of the Deputy Prime Minister of Israel, Mr Shimon Peres, in support of peace-building projects amongst Palestinian and Israeli children. During her visit the Begum met with various religious and political leaders in the region and called for the promotion of tolerance as the foundation for lasting peace in the Middle East.

Emergency course held at Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi
Kenya, December 2nd, 2005 On Friday 2nd December 2005, sirens screamed at the United Nations in Gigiri, all the way to the Aga Khan Hospital. But dont worry, all was well. The UN was participating in an emergency drill, in collaboration with the Aga Khan hospital and the Embassy of Israel, hence the sirens from the ambulances. The UN also offered its personnel and facilities for the exercise. The drill, which presented a simulation of evacuation and handling delicate cases of a disaster occurrence, is an important practical stage in emergency scenarios and that equips the participants with the skills to handle real situations with efficiency and rapid response.

The Aga Khan hospital was hosting an emergency course, "Advanced Life Support & Mass Casualty Preparedness". The course held in collaboration with the Embassy of Israel, focused on trauma and the participants acquired skills on how to handle severely injured patients in situations such as road accidents and gunshot wounds. The participants also learnt how to respond in mass casualty disasters such as airplane crash and natural disasters (earthquakes and tsunami). They learnt how to organize and set up an effective emergency unit.

The 3 Israeli experts, Dr. Barak Bar-Zakai, Mr. Nadim Hadid and Zmora Zohar have immense experience in Emergency services. Zmora Zohar has up to now facilitated all the eight on-the-spot courses that have been held in Kenya since the collaboration on the programme was initiated. Lucy Muchiri of the Aga Khan Hospital and Tazmina Dawood (Nursing Education Service Manager) coordinated the training. The eight trainees who participated, were drawn from the health provision industry in Kenya.

In November 2004, Aga Khan hospital provided its facilities for a Trauma care course. The course was organized by the Embassy of Israel in collaboration with the Resuscitation Council of Kenya.
