Geelani under house arrest
'Detainees Figures Not Exaggerated'
Srinagar, June 22: Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani was placed under house arrest on Wednesday.
"A huge contingent of police cordoned off Geelani sahib's Hyderpora residence this morning and informed him that he cannot move out," the Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar said.
He said that Geelani was scheduled to hold the meeting of Imams at his residence for devising a strategy against the social evils prevailing in the society."None was allowed to enter the residence which led to the cancellation of the meet," Akbar said, adding strict restrictions were imposed in the area.Meanwhile, reacting to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram's assertion that figures of Hurriyat Conference (G) about the political detainees were highly exaggerated, the amalgam maintained that 1465 persons are languishing in various prisons.
Giving details Ayaz Akbar said: "About 250 youth and 50 leaders of the conglomerate who were detained during 2010 unrest have not been released yet. "384, 350, 175, 25, 40, 110, 25, 30, 24, 15, 12 and 375 detainees are lodged in Central Jail Srinagar, Kotbalwal, Kathua, Amphalla, Hiranagar, Udhampur , Baramulla, Kupwara, Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi and Tihar jails respectively," he said.Pertinently, The Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday said: "Only 123 youth charged in stone-pelting are presently under detention while 45 others have been booked under Public Safety Act (PSA). Figures given by Geelani are highly exaggerated."
Hurriyat (G) spokesman said Chidambaram tried to "belittle" the serious issue of the political detainees, by referring only to the civilians arrested during the 2010 unrest."Those languishing in jails for the past two decades are not criminals and are political detainees under the provisions of international law," he said. "According to the United Nations Charter, armed militants arrested in the conflict zones also fall in the category of political prisoners. According to the international law, the political detainees should be treated in dignified way and there is no legal validity of the cases filed against them."
"There is no justification of lodging criminal cases against Kashmiri detainees. If India will someday show seriousness in the process of resolving Kashmir issue, then they will have to release the detainees including militants and withdraw cases against them," he said. "Dream of initiating a meaningful and result oriented dialogue cannot be fulfilled until all the detainees are released."He also urged International rights organizations including Amnesty International to look into the issue of detainees and pressurize Government of India to seek their release.
Meanwhile, the amalgam said the "non-lethal weapons" handed over to the forces in Jammu and Kashmir, had severe harmful impact on the human body."Though these weapons don't kill people instantly, but those targeted by them become victims of multiple ailments," Akbar said.
