Murder, rape and the final proof that Britain should never have fought this shaming war By Stephen Glover 25 Oct 2010 The Iraq war was fought in the name of civilised values and common decency. The British and Americans presented themselves as the good guys, bringing democracy and the rule of law and humanity to a dysfunctional country ruled by a lunatic genocidal tyrant... If this neat contrast between good and evil has already worn pretty thin in the seven-and-a-half years since the invasion of Iraq, it has now finally been blown apart by a massive leak of nearly 400,000 official American military 'field reports' by WikiLeaks... What they show is nothing less than mayhem and murder. They also reveal a reluctance by American forces to hold their Iraqi allies to account. U.S. authorities systematically failed to investigate hundreds of reports of abuse, torture, rape and murder by Iraqi police and soldiers. Beatings and assaults on prisoners were repeatedly ignored.

Wikileaks reveals Iraq assassinations 24 Oct 2010 The classified documents recently released by Wikileaks have shed light on a myriad of crimes and offences committed in Iraq over the past few years, including assassinations and murders. The leaked documents, which cover the period between January 1, 2004, and January 1, 2010, were mostly written by low-ranking officers who were reporting on "significant actions" in the field. The whistleblower website offers 325 documents detailing a whole range of killings from high-profile assassinations to the murder of civilians. The documents reveal that many Iraqi police officers, judges, election authorities and other officials as well as ordinary citizens were killed during the six-year period.

Pentagon ordered 'secret' torture in Iraq 24 Oct 2010 Whistleblower website Wikileaks has released documents suggesting that the Pentagon instructed US-led forces to "secretly" torture detainees in Iraq. In the largest-ever revelation of secret US military documents, Wikileaks has released nearly 400,000 classified reports about the US-led war in Iraq. The documents detail more than 1,700 cases of torture kept from the public by the US government.

'US-led soldier raped Iraqi girl' 25 Oct 2010 Newly-released Iraq war secrets by Wikileaks has revealed a large number of brutalities against Iraqi civilians and children, one such document recounts the rape of an Iraqi woman by a US-led soldier. According to the document, a US-led soldier raped a little Iraqi girl in 2007 but was not disciplined for his act of violence. The soldier was merely notified that an Iraqi man intended to kill him because of the rape. The Iraqi man was transferred to the Ramadi Detention Facility for threatening to kill a foreigner.

Baghdad to investigate role of Blackwater in deaths 25 Oct 2010 The Iraqi government says that it will investigate whether employees of the Blackwater security company were involved in hitherto undisclosed killings that emerged from the Wikileaks documents. In addition to a notorious case in Baghdad in 2007, when Blackwater guards killed 17 and wounded 18 civilians, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism says that it has discovered a further 14 cases when Blackwater personnel allegedly opened fire on civilians. The information comes from the war logs made public by Wikileaks and allegedly shows that a further 10 civilians were killed and seven wounded by Blackwater, a US-based private security company terror group now known as Xe.

Wikileaks Iraq: data journalism maps every death --Data journalism allows us to really interrogate the Wikileaks Iraq war logs release. 23 Oct 2010 Data journalism works best when there's a lot of data to work with. Wikileaks' Iraq war logs release has dumped some 391,000 records of the Iraq war into the public arena. Some key findings: The database records 109,032 deaths in total for the period...

Canadian ex-child soldier pleads guilty at Guantanamo 25 Oct 2010 Canadian former child soldier Omar Khadr, arrested by US forces in Afghanistan at age 15, pleaded guilty Monday to war crimes in a deal that will see him avoid a life sentence and possibly be returned to Canada. In a military tribunal at the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay, the Canada-born Khadr admitted to killing a US soldier with a grenade in 2002 during a firefight in Afghanistan, conspiring with Al-Qaeda and building roadside bombs.

Khadr has right to apply for repatriation: Toews 25 Oct 2010 Omar Khadr would be facing release from prison after three or four years, and possibly sooner, if he returns to Canada to serve the majority of a U.S.-imposed sentence after pleading guilty to murdering an American army medic in Afghanistan, legal experts predicted Monday. The Toronto-born Khadr, who was 15 when he was captured in Afghanistan eight years ago, would be subject to Canadian parole rules once he landed on Canadian soil, which would make him eligible to apply for release from prison after serving one-third to one-half of his sentence, said law professors at Queen's University and the University of Ottawa... Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said Monday that Khadr has a right to apply for a transfer once he is convicted under the International Transfer of Offenders Act -- but the minister would not comment on whether it would be granted.

Afghanistan to develop $3 trillion in mining potential [That's why the USociopaths are illegally occupying Afghanistan. Well, also to protect the opium and gas pipelines.] 25 Oct 2010 Afghanistan is estimated to be sitting on $3 trillion worth of untapped mineral deposits, but poor infrastructure and investor caution are inhibiting development of its mining industry, its mines minister said. "This estimate is based only on 30 percent of the country's area; there is still 70 percent we have no idea about," Afghan Mines Minister Wahidullah Shahrani told Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of an industry conference in Dubai on Monday.

Stryker unit sought to defend killing at heart of Afghan murder probe 25 Oct 2010 Three days after they killed an Afghan cleric named Mullah Adahdad, members of a U.S. Army platoon returned to his village. Tribal elders had complained to Army officers that the cleric had been unarmed and that the May 2 shooting was a setup. The soldiers tried to convince them otherwise.... "We didn't just [expletive] come over here and just shoot him randomly. And we don't do that," 1st Lt. Stefan Moye, the platoon leader, explained to village residents in Qualaday, in Kandahar province. In fact, Army charging documents now allege, that's exactly what soldiers in the platoon did - in perhaps the gravest war crime charges to emerge from the nine-year Afghan conflict. According to the documents, the cleric's death culminated a months-long conspiracy in which members of a unit of the 5th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division randomly targeted and killed three unarmed Afghan men, dismembered corpses and posed for grisly photographs with their victims.

Bomb attack leaves 4 dead in Afghanistan 25 Oct 2010 A bomb attack in southeast Afghanistan has taken at least four lives as the security situation continues to deteriorate in the war-ravaged country. The attack took place in Khost Province after an explosives-laden truck was blown up, killing one police officer and three civilians.

In Afghanistan, 17 US soldiers killed 25 Oct 2010 The Taliban say at least 17 American troops have been killed and several others have been wounded in a series of bomb blasts in troubled southeastern Afghanistan. The militant group claims the troops were ambushed inside a house in Khost Province. However, NATO says only six US forces were injured in the attack. Independent sources have not yet commented on the incident.

A. Lieberman orders 'day after' plans for tackling nuclear Iran --While government remains committed to prevention, contingency plan hints Israel may be losing faith in the world's ability to halt Tehran's atomic program - either diplomatically or by force. 25 Oct 2010 Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has commissioned a report on how to prepare for a nuclear-armed Iran as doubt mounts about the efficacy of preventive action, an Israeli source said on Monday. Publicly, Israel has pledged to deny the Iranians the means to make a bomb but its previous, centrist government also discreetly drew up "day after" contingency plans should Tehran's uranium enrichment pass the military threshold.

'Mossad behind Iranian military base blast' 25 Oct 2010 France's Le Figaro newspaper alleged Monday that the Mossad was responsible for an explosion which took place in Iran's Imam Ali military base, on October 12. The Imam Ali military base is located some 300 miles southwest of Tehran, amid rough mountainous terrain. It is one of the Islamic Republic's most secure military facilities, said to house a network of underground hangars and various missiles, including Shahab-3 missiles... The explosion claimed the lives of 18 people and left 10 other injured.

Report: Israel planned explosion at Iranian missile site 25 Oct 2010 An explosion that killed 18 members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on October 12 was ordered by the Mossad, French newspaper Le Figaro suggested on Monday. Another cause for the blast mentioned by the paper was a targeted Israeli air raid. Official Iranian reports stated that the explosion occurred after a fire broke out in a weapons depot. Le Figaro also alleged that the explosion occurred at a secret missile site for the long-range Shahab-3, capable of being modified to carry a nuclear payload and striking Israel.

Israeli troops burn Qur'an: Report 25 Oct 2010 Israeli soldiers have reportedly burnt the Muslim holy book of Qur'an during an overnight attack on a Palestinian family in the occupied West Bank. Sahar Beida said on Monday that she and her daughter had been confined in different rooms by Israeli soldiers who were there to arrest her husband Ismail. "When I came out I was shocked to find our Qur'ans were on the front step and had been burned," she told AFP.

308 bullets fired at Gaza activists 25 Oct 2010 Israel's army chief says Israeli forces fired more than 300 live bullets during the takeover of the Turkish-flagged aid ship, Mavi Marmara, back in May. In his second round of testimony before an Israeli inquiry panel on Sunday, the Israeli army's Chief of Staff, Gabi Ashkenazi, said Israeli navy commandos fired 308 live bullets aboard the Gaza-bound aid vessel during the deadly takeover of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla on May 31, Reuters reported.

'Israel abused Gazans during war' 25 Oct 2010 Israeli troops have abused Palestinian detainees during the 2008-2009 attack on the Gaza Strip, new photos released by a rights group show. The photos were published on Monday by Breaking the Silence, an Israeli group of veteran combat soldiers who collect testimonies and photos of troops who have served in the occupied territories. One picture shows a soldier pointing his assault rifle at the face of a blindfolded Palestinian detainee, AFP reported.

Anti-Muslim crusaders make millions spreading fear (Part I of II) 24 Oct 2010 Steven Emerson has 3,390,000 reasons to fear Muslims. That's how many dollars Emerson's for-profit company -- Washington-based SAE Productions -- collected in 2008 for researching alleged ties between American Muslims and overseas terrorism. The payment came from the Investigative Project on Terrorism Foundation, a nonprofit charity Emerson also founded, which solicits money by telling donors they're in imminent danger from Muslims. Emerson is a leading member of a multimillion-dollar industry of self-proclaimed experts who spread hate toward Muslims in books and movies, on websites and through speaking appearances.

Massive stretches of weathered oil spotted in Gulf of Mexico By Bob Marshall 23 Oct 2010 Just three days after the U.S. Coast Guard admiral in charge of the BP oil spill cleanup declared little recoverable surface oil remained in the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana fishers Friday found miles-long strings of weathered oil floating toward fragile marshes on the Mississippi River delta. The discovery, which comes as millions of birds begin moving toward the region in the fall migration, gave ammunition to groups that have insisted the government has overstated clean-up progress, and could force reclosure of key fishing areas only recently reopened.

The current efforts to expand CIA presence are meant to expand intelligence collection and facilitate more aggressive Pakistani-led actions on the ground. Some U.S. officials, however, remain hopeful that Islamabad will allow a greater covert presence that could include CIA paramilitary forces.
